The Naming of Frank Vohun Field at Villa Rica High School
Frank Thomas Vohun is a distinguished figure in the world of football, with a career spanning over four decades and a legacy of excellence that continues to inspire. Born on June 6, 1947, in Richmond, Virginia, Frank was a multi-sport athlete from an early age. As an All-State football, basketball, and baseball player at Hernando County High in Brooksville, Florida, his love for sports was evident, but it was football that became his lifelong passion.
Frank’s journey took him from the fields of Hernando County to Florida State University and then to Florida A&M, where he earned his Master’s degree. Football was more than just a game for Frank; it was a way of life. He spent 44 years coaching at numerous high schools and colleges, touching the lives of countless athletes and communities. Each place Frank and his family called home left a lasting imprint, a testament to the strong bonds he forged along the way.
Frank also held the esteemed position of Past President of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association, where he took great pride in building relationships with fellow coaches and contributing to the growth of the sport.
In 1990, Frank Vohun became the head coach and athletic director at VRHS after a brief stint in the private sector. Over the course of eight seasons, Frank built a legacy unmatched in the school’s history. He led the football team to 63 wins and only 32 losses, making the playoffs every year during his tenure. Frank’s leadership brought consistency and success, with an impressive 7.88 average wins per season. His 1991 and 1992 teams were particularly outstanding, achieving a record of 21 wins and 5 losses and advancing to the state semifinals.
Frank Vohun remains the most successful coach in VRHS football history. His dedication, leadership, and relentless pursuit of excellence have left an indelible mark on every program he’s been part of. Today, we honor and celebrate not just a coach, but a mentor, a leader, and a true icon of the game.
